This guide explains how to create and assign custom templates to specific products within the Surge theme. This is the best approach when you want a fully customized page layout or unique content for a handful of specific products (e.g., your best-sellers) rather than using the same default layout for everything.
Overview
While Shopify uses a Default Product template for all items, you can create unique templates to showcase specific products differently. This allows you to add unique sections, banners, or descriptions to one product without affecting the rest of your catalog.
When to use this:
- When you have 1–5 "hero" products that need a unique look.
- When you want to add specific marketing sections to one product page only.
- Note: If you have hundreds of products, using Metafields is generally more efficient than creating hundreds of templates.
Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Access the Theme Editor
- Log in to your Shopify Admin.
- Go to Online Store > Themes.
- Find your Surge theme and click Edit Theme.
Step 2: Open the Product Template Menu
- At the top of the screen, click the Home page dropdown menu (the page selector).
- Select Products from the list.
Step 3: Create a New Template
- You will see the Default product template listed. To create a new one, click Create template.
- Name your template: Give it a clear name (e.g., the name of the specific product, like Columbian-Coffee).
- Based on: Select Default product. This duplicates your current layout so you don't have to start from scratch.
- Click Create Template.
Step 4: Customize the Layout
- You are now editing your new custom template.
- Add, remove, or hide sections (e.g., Image with Text, Featured Collection, or unique Product Tabs) that should only appear for this specific product.
- Click Save in the top right corner.
Step 5: Assign the Template to Your Product
Note: Creating the template doesn't automatically apply it. You must tell Shopify which product should use it.
- Go back to your Shopify Admin (Product section).
- Open the specific product you want to change (e.g., the "Columbian" product).
- On the product edit page, scroll down to the Online Store sidebar on the right.
- Under Theme template, change "Default product" to your newly created template (e.g., Columbian-Coffee).
- Click Save.

Summary
To repeat this for other products (like "El Salvador"), simply return to the Theme Editor, create another template based on the default, and assign it to the corresponding product in the admin settings.
