Updating your Surge theme ensures you always have the newest features, design options, and performance improvements. Because Shopify doesn’t automatically update themes, you’ll need to follow this quick process.

Step 1: Back Up Your Current Theme

  1. From your Shopify Admin, go to Online Store → Themes.

  2. Locate your current live theme at the top.

  3. Click the … (three dots) menu next to CustomizeDownload theme file.

  4. Shopify will email you a download link. This can take a few minutes.

  5. Save this ZIP file safely — it’s your backup copy in case anything goes wrong.

Step 2: Download the Latest Version

  • Log in to your Surge account dashboard (where you manage your license).

  • Download the most recent Surge theme ZIP file.

  • If your license is active, you’ll see the option to Check for updates.

  • Compare your current version with the latest one shown.

  • Download the updated file when prompted.

Step 3: Update Your Existing Theme Files

Instead of reapplying all settings manually, Surge lets you update your existing theme by replacing one internal folder.

  • First, download/export your current Surge theme from Shopify as a ZIP file.

  • Unzip the file on your computer.

  • From the newly downloaded Surge version, copy the internal “upgrade” folder.

  • Replace the corresponding folder inside your exported theme with this new one.

  • Once replaced, re-zip the entire theme folder.

  • Go back to your Shopify Admin → Online Store → Themes → Add theme → Upload zip file, and upload this updated ZIP.

  • The new version (with all your previous settings retained) will appear in your Theme Library.

This method ensures your custom settings stay intact — saving time and avoiding manual copy-paste between versions.

Step 4: Preview and Publish

  1. Use the Preview option on the new version to confirm everything looks correct.

  2. Once you’re happy, click Publish.

  3. Your store now runs on the updated Surge theme 🎉.

Notes & Best Practices

  • Always keep at least one backup copy of your previous theme.

  • Store data (products, pages, apps) is unaffected by theme updates — only design settings need to be re-applied.

  • Updates via your Surge license ensure you always have the newest features without losing your edits.

✅ That’s it! You’ve successfully updated Surge to the latest version.
