Welcome aboard! This guide will walk you through the essentials of setting up and customizing Surge for your Shopify store. Think of it as your quick-start checklist. By the end, you’ll know how to install the theme, unlock your license, and start building your store with confidence.

Step 1 - Installing Surge (Zip Upload / Theme Library)

You’ll receive Surge as a .zip file after purchase. To install:

  • In Shopify Admin, go to Online Store > Themes.

  • Click Upload Theme and select your Surge .zip file.

  • Once uploaded, Surge will appear in your Theme Library.

👉 Pro tip: You can keep multiple themes in your library to test changes safely.

Step 2 - Generate & Add Your License Key

Surge requires a license key to unlock updates and premium features.

  • You’ll receive this key via email or your account dashboard.

  • In Shopify Admin, go to your Theme settings > License Key and paste it in.

  • Save changes to activate.

If you're encountering issues, please visit our Licence Verification Troubleshooting guide.

Step - 3 Manage & Find Other Licenses

If you’re running multiple stores, you can manage all your licenses from your customer account dashboard. Here you can:

  • View active licenses

  • Reassign licenses

  • Renew or upgrade to higher plans

Step 4 - Open the Online Store Editor

The Online Store Editor is where all the magic happens.

  • From your Themes page, click Customize next to Surge.

  • This opens the live editor, where you’ll see your storefront and editing sidebar.

  • You’ll use the store editor to adjust layouts, colors, fonts, and everything else.

Step 5 - Working with Templates

Surge includes customizable templates for different parts of your store:

  • Home – your landing hub for shoppers.

  • Product pages – showcase items with images, descriptions, and add-to-cart.

  • Collection pages – group similar products together.

  • Cart – manage what customers are buying before checkout.

  • Custom pages – create “About Us,” “FAQ,” or anything unique.

You can create multiple versions of templates (e.g., different product layouts) and assign them as needed.

Step 6 - Editor Basics

The editor works with Sections and Blocks:

  • Sections are big building blocks (header, footer, product grid).

  • Blocks are smaller elements inside sections (buttons, text, images).

  • You can drag and drop them to reorder.

  • Use the 👁️ icon to show/hide content for quick testing.

  • Preview how your store looks on desktop, tablet, and mobile—all within the editor.

Step 7 - Saving, Publishing & Backups

When you’re happy with your edits:

  • Save often to keep progress.

  • Publish when you’re ready for customers to see changes.

  • Duplicate your theme before making big updates—this creates a backup copy in case you need to roll back.

👉 This safety net ensures you never lose work.

✨ That’s it! You’re officially up and running with Surge. From here, you can dive deeper into customizing sections and blocks to bring your brand to life.
